Title: Undisciplined
Day/Theme: July 16 / View from the afternoon
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Sokka & Zuko
Rating: PG-13

Zuko leaned against the balcony rail, idly tapping the metal bar below his palms. The afternoon sun glazed the palace grounds, purpling the shadows and reflecting off the water in the turtleduck ponds. It was a beautiful sight and while Zuko was usually appreciative, his gaze today was empty. The young man slumped down. I hate my advisors.

The wind was gentle, brushing his cheeks and the leaves on the nearby trees. It wasn't quiet; the children from the academy were yelling in the distance, the decorum of earlier years long gone now. But it was peaceful, and the first time he'd had to himself in a while.

"Oi, Zuko! Some news for you, you jerk; know those Earth people you put aside on measly probation last spring? Anyway, they're using my designs now - my designs, ha, whaddya know - and making a nice profit off of them. Which is like a direct violation of the treaty we put in two years ag - are you listening to me?"

His friend's voice broke through the afternoon doze like a bullhorn. Zuko snorted in exasperated fondness. "Of course I am. Another meeting?"

Sokka eyed him, thin brows rising. "Not if you're avoiding your advisors again." The word lameass hung in the air by Sokka's wide grin.

"Sokka, you're telling me your designs are good enough to be worth the torture of another afternoon spent in the company of senile old coots."

The other young man sniffed, nose in the air. "My designs are good enough for anything, you delinquent."

"You think so?"

"I know so, snotface."

"Peasant."

"Zuzu."

Zuko groaned softly. Sokka threw his head back and laughed freely. Both of them stilled as they heard frantic voices coming closer to the balcony the young Fire Lord had fled to. The reprieve was almost over, but the afternoon sun still warmed the steel by Zuko's side.

"Sokka," he gestured, "come watch with me." The other man grumbled immediately about paperwork and embassies, obligations they all had. But he still came forward, quirked smile playing on his tanned face as he gazed down. A turtleduck quacked in the distance. And Zuko, with his closest confidante at his side and his quiet peaceful grounds all around him, was happy.
