I saw Milk. I thought it was a really great movie. The first thing I noticed, though, was that the audience was mostly middle-aged or elderly. It is mostly this age demographic that is against gay rights. The story of Harvey Milk was not long ago; many of these people had lived through it. There was many times that video footage came on the screen and the audience all said, "Ah, I remember this," which I thought was great. However, I wish that there had been more young people like myself in the audience. We live in a time where it is easy to educate yourself on the history of humanitarian movements. Our right to educate ourselves on movements (such as the one for gay rights) is more protected than ever before. Seems to me like America is moving more and more forward. People are always pessimistic, but Harvey Milk was fighting only thirty years ago. It's important to understand how far progress has come in a remarkably short time.

The demographic was the same for me too. Also, my friend Julia and I were the only two females in the theatre. I think it's also difficult to get a large demographic to such a movie when it's only being played at select theatres.

Milk was an amazing, inspiring, horrifically sad movie (yes, I sobbed). I was actually surprised by how many people saw it when I did, the theatre was packed... Granted I did see it on a holiday. But, it was a very mixed audience - elderly folks to teenagers. Everyone clapped at the end of the movie and I swear there was not one dry eye. Too bad this didn't come out before the passing of prop 8... though I doubt it would have made much of a difference because most people are far too bigoted to be swayed by anything. It might have reached a few people though.
