Um, uhm. So I lied before! But... but, here's fic. Finally.
(PS. I totally dropped my dad off at work today. Is that badass or sad? My family has to do some car juggling so I can have a car while I'm home from school, they're so nice. I dropped my DAD off at WORK and then drove back home to pick up documents. Oh, then I had to go to the DMV and cried because the DMV sucks. But forget that. :()
(PPS. Everything I have about describing this fic is in a state of work. DON'T JUDGE MEEE.)
Title: Lifeguard!Jun, Part 1/?
Rating: Safe, for now!
Pairings: Eventually. For now, Aiba/Komodo dragons.
Summary: "Matsumoto-kun," his manager continues, gravely, "I know it's not like you anyway, but you have a month before it's officially announced and promotions begin. Look, I have to go, but please... please don't do anything strange during this time."
"Jun, could you chop the onions?"
"Sure," he calls back over his shoulder. "It's not that often we cook like this, though. Did she ask for Western food again?"
His mother scowls from where she's standing over the sink, furiously peeling potatoes. Jun looks back calmly; he and his mother have a good understanding, in that Jun's genes for being unable to stand stupidity had to have come from somewhere.
"She gave me an entire list of what to cook before she and her friend even arrive. Then, you know," his mother throws down the potato in the sink with a plop, "she finished off the conversation with how the reason you and your sister grew up to be respectable citizens was hardly due to my mothering skills. Honestly..."
Jun smiles as he slices through the vegetables. "Grandmother's a willful woman."
"Willful is one word for that."
"'Kaasan..."
"All right, all right!" She laughs, and another potato goes in the sink. "Well, I'm glad you have this time off to help us with all this. You auditioned for that big movie, right? Last month? When are you going to know about that?"
"Here," Jun tips the onions into the bowl, pushing them off the knife with his fingertips. "And any day now. You know, if I get that role..."
His mother stills from where she's been stirring the salad. "I understand. Jun, I've already told you, but as long as you're doing what makes you happy... I'm fine with whatever happens. Can you get the tofu?"
"Yeah," he says, grinning as he ducks his head. "Wait, sorry." His cellphone is ringing, and Jun's mind is kind of blank as he towels his hands off. The tone means it's his manager.
"By the way, she also mentioned something..."
Jun nods in response to his mother's absentminded speaking. He picks up the phone like it's a viper, and then nearly drops it because his manager is speaking very fast and very loudly.
"Matsumoto-kun! JUN-KUN!! We got the role! I just got the news today and it's been passed through the agency. You got the role!" Jun whispers, shocked, "I, I got the role?" but his manager continues like he didn't hear him.
"Matsumoto-kun," his manager continues, gravely, "I know it's not like you anyway, but you have a month before it's officially announced and promotions begin. Look, I have to go, but please... please don't do anything strange during this time."
Jun says, "Yes, of course." He ends the call and stares at the counter. He's only a small actor but he just got the lead in one of the most anticipated films of the year.
"...she said that the lifeguard for their beach over there couldn't make it all of a sudden. You're still certified, aren't you? So I mentioned that you had this time free and all the residents want to see you again in any case." His mother's still continuing from before. "Why don't you take Ohno-kun and lifeguard there again this month?"
"Yes, of course," Jun repeats blankly. Then his mind snaps back online. "Pardon me, what?"
*
That's how Jun ends up being a lifeguard at a senior citizen beach a month before his big break.
It's not a chore, exactly. Jun had done the job before during high school. Despite his mother and grandmother constantly sniping at each other, his family is very close, and Jun had spent a lot of time at his grandmother's as a child. This town and its one beach, Jun thinks, have been charmingly untouched by time. Most of the residents are elderly, and they treat Jun like their own grandchild. It's a nice place to be before his life takes a sudden, drastic turn into the limelight.
It's also extremely unlikely that anything strange will happen here. He's pragmatic like that.
"Hey, wake up," Jun says, making sure to tap Ohno's head with one of his rings. His friend would sleep through anything else. "I have to be out there by six."
"Ow," comes the plaintive answer from the Ohno-shaped lump under the blankets. "Do I have to come?"
Jun sighs. "You said yourself that you wanted to try making a sculpture while the sand was still wetter."
There's a long pause before Ohno emerges, eyes still squinched shut and hair sticking in every direction. "Ah, right."
Ohno Satoshi has been in Jun's life for a long time now, ever since he had first joined his talent agency. Contrary to what people expect of Ohno's personality (and apparently contrary to what Ohno expects of himself), he's also in entertainment. Ohno does stageplays when they are offered to him due to a strong singing ability, but his income comes largely from his artistic career. He's one of the most talented people Jun knows, but also one of the most undetermined.
They balance each other well that way. Jun motivates Ohno to get more work, while Ohno's personality reminds Jun not to work so much. Jun would be the first to admit, though, that if they hadn't met through the agency, they probably would never have become friends.
The two of them dress lazily in the morning light slanting in through the windows. Jun and Ohno are staying in Jun's grandmother's house while she visits his home in Tokyo. Ohno's girlfriend has recently broken up with him, and it's probably good for Ohno to be here. Jun thinks approvingly that his mother is pretty observant.
It's their second day here. The morning sun is starting to warm up the sand as they wander down the length of the beach, picking up the signs that warn of no lifeguard on duty. It'll be a while before anyone shows up, but this quiet time is Jun's favorite.
He leans back in the chair up in the lifeguard tower and smiles as the rising sun plays over his skin.
*
It's Friday around noon when Jun first hears the weirdest laugh he's ever heard in his life.
His first thought is that it's like a chicken being strangled. His mind flails around trying to find an apt description. Jun instinctively checks that there's no one far out in the water before twisting around to try and find the source of the sound. Ohno's humming loudly as he works on his latest sand masterpiece close to to the lifeguard tower.
There's three young guys standing not too far away. That's already strange, as the only people under the age of 60 on this beach are usually Jun and Ohno. Jun can tell they're attractive. Some elderly ladies are giving appraising glances at them from the side.
The tallest one is almost bent over double, still laughing. He has dyed light brown hair and smiles brightly as the shortest one of the three slaps him lightly on the head. The shortest one, if Jun can see correctly, has brought a Nintendo DS. To the beach. (Jun can't say he approves.) The last one, who looks remarkably built, has an exasperated look as he pushes the other two apart.
As he looks at them, Jun feels some weird sense of recognition. Maybe they're someone's grandchildren or relatives, visiting for a while. But he knows everyone here, and he hasn't seen them before.
"Ohno-kun," he calls down. "Hey, do you recognize those guys?"
"Eh?" It takes a while for Ohno to look up from whatever he's doing with his hands. There's a smudge on his cheek and sand in his hair. He squints over through the bright sunlight. "No way, Moto-kun." Ohno has a penchant for weird nicknames.
"Well, whatever." Jun has a job to do.
He wonders how the one with the weird laugh can smile so brightly, though.
*
It's been three days since then, and the three young men have come to the beach consistently. It's easy to point them out.
From what Jun can see, the tallest one spends a lot of time laughing. He never goes swimming, and doesn't take off his t-shirt even when it's hot. The one who looked built at first sight has been trying to surf every day, but he's not good at it. The shortest man has dark hair, and seemingly comes to the beach to sit under an umbrella and smash at DS buttons. He doesn't always come. They're interesting to watch. Jun still doesn't know who they are, and they're really the only other young people around.
Ohno's proudly proclaimed that he's working on a Komodo dragon sand sculpture today. With wings, he adds, that's cooler. Jun has no idea how anyone will recognize a Komodo dragon made out of sand, but everything Ohno makes ends up looking amazing no matter how odd it is.
He's gazing out at the water when two of the three young men pass by. Jun looks down at the tops of their heads. The light-haired man suddenly stops in his tracks, gazing down with surprise.
"Uwa! So cool! This is a Komodo dragon, isn't it? With wings! How'd you do it?"
Ohno wipes his hands on a towel, grinning. He doesn't mind when people don't understand his art, but Jun knows he really likes it when people actually do. "Just sand and water."
"A Komodo dragon with wings would be amazing. It'd be snapping everywhere, and flying," the young man muses, now crouched down and peering at the carefully crafted face. "Wow, hey, ow!"
The built man that was walking with him has hooked a finger in the t-shirt's collar, pulling him back. "Sorry," he says to Ohno with a smile, "he's easily excitable. You're very talented."
"That's not just talent, it's creativity!" The other man declares loudly. Jun can't stop his lips from twitching up into a smile, even though none of them can see him.
Ohno's muttering through his thanks (he's really not good at taking praise, after a while), when the dark-haired man's cell phone beeps. The look on his face that shows at the sound is so comedically horrified that Ohno stops, staring. All of a sudden the man explodes into motion, putting an arm around the other man's shoulders and pulling him up and away.
"Sorry, sorry," he excuses them. "Come on, Masaki, you know that Nino will snap worse than any giant lizard if we're late - let's go, let's go right now--"
"Nino?" Masaki says, blinking, "But Shooo..."
His whine trails off as the two men walk briskly up to the main road, where Jun knows the one hotel and small shops are. They turn the corner and disappear from sight, the taller man's voice still audible. Jun finally allows himself to give a small laugh.
"Well," he calls down to Ohno, "I'm glad someone realized it was a Komodo dragon."
Ohno hums something pleased in response.

Date: 2009-03-19 02:08 am (UTC)Your Jun IS remarkably sane. This really seems to flow very well. I LOVE Ohno's artistic ability with the sand sculpture and the wings. It's such nice little touches.
And, this will sound weird, but I kind of love that Ohno just broke up with his gf. I don't know why. But...it somehow makes them more... real? It just gives me a happy feeling.
GO YOU!

Date: 2009-03-19 02:35 am (UTC)Interesting that you mention the girlfriend thing. Jun totally doesn't have the full story on that, but he doesn't know it.
This fic will be sloowww, maybe... kind of too real? But I think it'll get across what I want to say, hopefully. :D Keep an eye out for real Arashi experiences/stuff they experienced in their dramas or movies, 'cause it's gonna be mentioned a lot.
Writing fics is fun~.

Date: 2009-03-24 06:47 am (UTC)(Nino will never let go of his DS! Until he finds Ohno, in any case. lol foreshadowing) I wasn't super sure if I wanted to use this style for this fic, since it's pretty dependent on Jun's moods and he's calm and collected and introspective for the large part... so I'm glad you liked it!
But those three will ruin Jun's month of peace. completely. ufufufu~
