Fandom: Naruto
Characters: Naruto, Sasuke
Rating: As G as it gets.
AN: Could be AU, could be not! Amusing sand castle imagery. It might've been a great friendship, really.
Young
Naruto sat at the very edge of the lake, the water licking at his feet as he crouched. He looked over the wet sand with squinched eyes, peering from one eye and then from the other. His castle looked good! The seven-year-old bounced on his heels and grinned.
Footsteps approached. Naruto kept his head down, expecting them to go by. They stopped, and he lifted his head with curiosity. A black-haired boy his age was standing on the dryer sand. Naruto glared at him, because if this boy messed his castle up he'd have to beat him up and then Naruto would get in trouble for everything, anyway.
"Whaddya want?"
"I'm just looking," said the boy, soft-spoken. "It looks nice."
Naruto frowned. "Oh. Thanks."
The boy moved closer, voiding Naruto's previous thought that he hadn't wanted to get his feet wet. "Why're you playing alone?"
" 'Cause people get in trouble if they play with me. Stupid dog-boy wanted to - but his parents yell at him whenever he does," he paused, prodding a shell into place, "so I told him to go 'way."
"You're weird," said the other boy, plopping down on the other side of the castle. Naruto glared daggers and wrinkled his nose at him.
"You're weirder! Why are you sitting by me anyway," he said, molding the last tower into shape. His castle was awesome and cool and it had three towers and a family lived in it, he'd decided, and they were happy because they were living together in such a cool place.
"Because I wanna."
"No one wants to. Except Kiba but he's stupid for real."
"Well I do, stupid. You're in my class, aren't you?"
The primary school level was attended by all children, even if they did not intend on becoming shinobi in their later years. They had big classes, and Naruto only vaguely remembered this boy sitting all by himself (even Naruto had someone to sit with) on the other side of the room.
"Guess so," he muttered. He didn't like thinking about school. And, no matter how much he was straining to recall it, he couldn't remember this boy's name. The sun crawled by above them and the lake water rippled. The cries of the other children, playing some distance away, were muted.
"You sound stupid in class," the other boy said. There wasn't exactly malice in it. "Don't you want to be a shinobi?"
Naruto jabbed at a rock viciously. "S'not my fault I can't read good."
"...are you really stupid-"
"No one's helped me! Shut up. Geez. Go 'way already."
"I was joking." Naruto looked at the other kid and wondered if the boy had been taught to make jokes while looking like a plank of wood. "You don't sound stupid. But Midori-sensei always picks on you. And all the adults are mean to you. Why?"
"Dunno."
"Me neither."
"Hokage-jiichan is the only one that's nice to me. But see, I don't really care," the other boy's fingers were poking at the small tomatoes embedded on the rightmost tower, and Naruto smacked the hand away, " 'cause when I grow up I'll be Hokage and I'll be nice to everyone. I mean--" The black-haired boy tried again. "Stop that!"
"I like tomatoes! You're wasting them!"
"I'M NOT. The lady came by and gave them to me with the rest of the stuff but vegetables are icky. So they're for the castle."
It really was a nice castle. The three towers were stately, for a sand castle, and all three were different. The one on the left was decorated with small, yellowish lake stones that went in a spiral. The middle tower had a shower of cherry blossom petals all over it (Naruto liked them, and he liked this girl in the other class because her hair was pretty, like the blossoms), and the tower to the right of that had, strangely enough, cherry tomatoes embedded in the sand. It was strange, but it didn't really look bad. Not bad for him doing it alone, he thought to himself proudly.
The boy stuck his tongue out at him. "You're never going to be Hokage!"
"Ha, watch me! Rooster-head! ...hey!" He dodged the handhold of sand that'd been flung at him. The other boy grinned and that was the first time he'd even moved his face during this whole time, so Naruto grinned back. It fell, though, when the boy brushed himself off.
"Have to go home now."
"Oh."
The boy hesitated, looking down at him. "Be here next week?"
"Yeah!" The grin he was sporting was nearly splitting his face, obscuring the whisker scars in the little-boy dimpled cheeks. "Bye!"
Five days later, Itachi slaughtered the Uchiha clan.
// end.
Someone please draw me cute little children. :[
