Is American education a meritocracy?

Discuss.

NO.

The American education system is as much of a meritocracy as the American government is a democracy. It sounds right, but when you look even a little bit deeper, you see that the claims shatter and fall to even a speck of logical analysis.

one name, three words: John Taylor Gatto

The Six Lesson School Teacher and his interview on WTP are really good.

Explain meritocracy to me? Checked a dictionary, sort of understood the definition, but still have trouble applying it to an educational system.
